Huaichuan received her BA in Law in China, MA in Development Administration in Australia, and her PhD in Management in Britain, University of Cambridge. She has carried out research extensively on business strategy, multinational firms, foreign direct investment, and their impact on development.

She has been invited by various prestigious institutions including the United Nations and European Commission to speak on China’s overseas investment and its impact. She has published about a dozen books and papers: a forthcoming book on Chinese multinationals (Routledge 2009) will analyse the strategy and behaviour of the ten most important Chinese multinational firms investing overseas. Managers of these firms were extensively interviewed in China from 2005-8, and in Sudan in April and May 2008. She is a consultant to various companies, mainly in energy and resource sectors.
